Biography

Mariella Bettineschi was born in Brescia in 1948. After completing Art School, in 1970, she graduated from the Giacomo Carrara Academy of Fine Arts in Bergamo.

Since 1996 digital painting has played an essential role in her work, thanks to the possibility for manipulation, comparable to traditional artistic tools.

The artist has probed, through different methods and materials, the possible relationships with reality, with particular attention to women’s condition, through a multidisciplinary approach: painting, sculpture, architecture. Photography and digital image have played a crucial role for her, thanks to their possibility of manipulation, comparable to traditional art instruments.

After participating in the XLIII Venice Biennale on the invitation of Achille Bonito Oliva, she was chosen by Wenzel Jacob for the Aspekte der Biennale Venedig exhibition at the Munich Art Forum (Mariella Bettineschi, Sylvie Blocher, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Toshikatsu Endo, Felice Levini, Illja Kabakov, Eliseo Mattiaci, Mimmo Paladino, Maurizio Pellegrin, Susanna Solano, Tom Van Summeren, Keiji Uematsu) and Hans Gercke for the exhibition Blau: Farbe der Ferne, at the Kunstverein in Heidelberg (Josef Albers, Mariella Bettineschi, Alighiero and Boetti, Irma Blanck, César, Marc Chagall, Sandro Chia, Tony Cragg, Wim Delvoye, Otto Dix, Jan Fabre, Max Ernst, Gilbert and George, Hans Hartung, Paul Jenkins, Wassily Kandinsky, Anish Kapoor, Paul Klee, Yves Klein , Urs Luthi, Pablo Picasso, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Salvo, Rafael Soto, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol).

From 1987 to 1993 she worked with the Galleria Emilio Mazzoli in Modena. In 1989 she moved to Berlin, where she worked until 1995. In 1990, her first monograph, edited by Achille Bonito Oliva, was published by Electa. In 1992, the Landscape in Black, installation at Villa Reale in Monza, curated by Paolo Biscottini and Giorgio Verzotti.

In 1994 she was invited by Amnon Barzel and Päivi Kiiski to participate in the European Sculpture City in TurkuFinland (Mariella Bettineschi, Leena Ikonen, Mario Merz, Micha Ulmann), where she installed the sculpture Celestial Car in front of the Wäinö Altonen Museum of Art.

In 1998 she presented the exhibition Stolen from Time at the Galleria Continua in San Gimignano and in 1999 The Dressing of the Bride at the Kunstverein in Heidelberg, curated by Hans GerckeGiorgio Verzotti and Gianni Romano.

2002 was the year of the installation N.Y.C. Groundzero at the Museum of New Art in Detroit and the IIC in New York.

In 2006, the exhibition Voyager, curated by Giacinto Di PietrantonioCristina Rodeschini and Sid Sachs, which travelled through the United States, stopped over in New York at Dorfman Projects and New York University; in Philadelphia at University of Arts; at the Santa Monica Museum of Art and the IIC in Los Angeles and in Detroit at the Museum of New Art. Voyager returned to Italy at the GAMeC – Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bergamo and the San Pellegrino Space in Milan.

In 2013 Corraini Editore published the monograph Mariella Bettineschi, A Moving Archipelago by Francesca Pasini, with a selection of works from 1980 to 2013, followed by several exhibitions including Zoom – Italian photography at the Remotti FoundationCamogli (Vanessa Beecroft, Mariella Bettineschi, Luigi Ghirri, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Linda Fregni Nagler, Mimmo Jodice, Olivo Barbieri, Nico Vascellari, Stefano Arienti, Ugo Mulas, Paola di Bello, Rà Di Martino, Cesare Viel, Francesco Jodice, Elizabeth Aro, Marina Ballo Charmet, Andrea Botto, Maria Mulas).

In 2016 Giacinto Di Pietrantonio and Cristina Rodeschini invited her to the exhibition Atlas of images and shapes at the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Bergamo (Getulio Alviani, Cory Arcangel, Stefano Arienti, Mariella Bettineschi, Luciano Fabro, Ferrario Frères, Invernomuto, Renaud Jerez, Corrado Levi, Ken Okiishi, Adrian Paci, Giulio Paolini, Emilio Prini, Dan Rees, Sarah Sparkes, Josh Tonsfeldt and Remco Torenbosch).

In 2018 Richard Saltoun Gallery in London invited her to Artissima, within the project The Subversive Stitch, curated by Paola Ugolini (Olga De Amaral, Mariella Bettineschi, Thomas De Falco, Silvia Giambrone, Greta Schodl, Annegret Soltau, Shelagh Wakely) and to Paris Photo, together with Eleanor Antin, Renate Bertlmann, Elisabetta Catalano, Helen Chadwick, Gina Pane, Penny Slinger, Jo Spence, Annegret Soltau, Ulay.

In 2019 Sara Zanin Gallery in Rome took her to the ArteFiera in Bologna with Beatrice Pediconi and the Fondazione Volume ! in Rome dedicated the first event to her, titled Percezioni 1.

Enrico de Pascale began the season of ART UP at the headquarters of UBI BANCA, Bergamo, showing the work The next era (Bartolomeo Veneto, Lucrezia Borgia).

Richard Saltoun Gallery, on occasion of MiArt 2019, placed her work in the Transformer curated by Paola Ugolini (Mariella Bettineschi, Jürgen Klauke, Pierre Molinier, Victoria Sin e ULAY).

Patricia Laigneau invited her to the exhibition Tribute to Leonardo and the Renaissance at the Château du RivauLoire (Mariella Bettineschi, Mat Collishaw, Jan Fabre, Laurent Grasso, Ange Leccia, Urs Lüthi, Orlan, Panamarenco, Andres Serrano, Sun Xue).
